Conch Fritters

Conch shells are thought to contain the sound of the ocean, and they also contain a unique form of meat. Known as "the escargot of Florida," conch fritters are one of the state's famous foods that can be found at these top restaurants.

Sunset Cafe Waterfront Bar & Grill - 500 W. Cocoa Beach Cswy., Cocoa Beach, FL 32931
How good are the conch fritters at Sunset Cafe Waterfront Bar & Grill? One delighted customer declared they were just like the conch fritters he first fell in love with in the Bahamas. These delicate bites are fried in a savory batter and served alongside a Carolina dipping sauce. Between the tasty seafood menu and the spectacular waterfront views, Sunset Cafe makes the perfect finish to a day in Cocoa Beach. Hours are 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. daily.

Mo-Bay Grill - 1401 Indian River Dr., Sebastian, FL 32958
Wesley Campbell's award-winning culinary career began at the tender age of 14. In 2005, Campell brought international cuisine to the area near Sebastian when he opened Mo-Bay Grill. Mo-Bay's gently fried conch fritters come with a cherry pepper remoulade dipping sauce. The menu includes other Caribbean favorites such as jerk-style Mahi-Mahi, oxtail stew, and curried goat. Hours are 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. daily.

Bahama Breeze - 3989 Plaza Blvd., Gainesville, FL 32608
Take a trip to the islands just minutes from Gainesville with the tropical drinks, colorful decor, and island music at Bahama Breeze. Their conch fritters receive some added zip with the addition of corn and bell peppers, along with the honey mustard dipping sauce. Fritters make a nice starter for entrées such as skirt steak churrasco, seafood paella, and Jamaican jerk chicken. Bahama Breeze is open 11 a.m. - 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. midnight Friday and Saturday.

Conch House - 57 Comares Ave., St. Augustine, FL 32080
