Amelia Island Living - Festivals and Events
Amelia Island is buzzing with festivals and community events throughout the year. As spring begins, the return of three of the Island's favorite events brings excitement to car enthusiasts, gardeners, cyclists, and runners along with all their spectators.
Amelia Island Concours D'Elegance
Even if you're not a car enthusiast, the Concours D'Elegance is an event full of excitement. The festival begins Friday with the Porsche Driving Experience which includes a high-speed ride for participants (no Porsche required!). Activities throughout the day continue with the Eight Flags Road Tour, a photography exhibit, test drives of various manufacturers, and ends with the exclusive DuPont Registry Live Aeroport Reception, a display of vintage and contemporary planes, boats, motorcycles and other vehicles.
Saturday continues with more exhibits, test drive locations, seminars, and book signings. Saturday evening features the Mercedes-Benz Gala Dinner and after party. Sunday is the main event, which kicks off at 9:30 a.m. at the Golf Club of Amelia Island. Awards will be presented to Best in Show and Best in Class among others.
This year's Concours D'Elegance will be held March 6 through 9 with most events at the Ritz-Carlton Amelia Island, located at 4750 Amelia Island Parkway. For schedules and information, visit the website or call (904) 277-1100.
Amelia Island Garden Show
Whether your garden is filled with flowers and plants, fruit trees, and shrubs, or if you just enjoy seeing all the rare, unique, and native plants on display, the Amelia Island Garden Show offers a spectacular collection that won't disappoint.
The show will feature a full assortment of plants and flowers including palm trees, orchids, and herbs, along with gardening accessories and much more. This year's Featured Exhibit is the Raptor Experience where guests can get up close to Florida's native birds of prey. Guests will learn about the birds' natural history, the rehabilitation techniques used to help nurse sick and injured birds so they can return to the wild, and learn how important these birds are to the natural environment.
This year's Garden Show will be held April 19 and 20 at Central Park, located at 2500 Atlantic Avenue in Fernandina Beach. Admission is $5 for adults, children under 12 are free. For more information, call (904) 491-4872
Katie Ride For Life
At the age of 17, Katie Caples was on her way home from a March of Dimes walk in Jacksonville when her car was struck by another driver and she was killed. Because she was an organ donor, she was able to give the gift of life to five recipients. The Katie Caples Foundation was formed in 1998, following her death, to increase the number of registered organ donors and to help Katie's legacy live on.
The Ride for Life was organized to raise awareness and to gain support for the Katie Caples Foundation. Cyclists of all abilities are encouraged to participate and events include a Fun Ride, and competitive courses of 18 miles, 36 miles, 62 miles, and 100 miles. A 5k and 10k walk/run is also held for participants who prefer to keep their feet on the ground.
This year's Katie Ride For Life is celebrating its 10th anniversary. It will be held on Saturday, April 12 and will begin at the Atlantic Recreation Center at 2500 Atlantic Avenue. Visitors may gather at the Main Beach or along Atlantic Avenue to cheer on the riders, walkers, and runners. For more information, call (904) 277-4851.
