  • Fall Pest Alert

    by Watson Realty | Nov 04, 2013

With leaves changing color, longer nights and cooler weather prompts preparation for the fall season. Along with the beauty of the foliage comes the migration of insects and pests to warmer temperatures. As these insects seek shelter from the cold and from predators, what better place is there to find refuge than your home?

These smaller pests, including spiders, cockroaches, cluster flies, carpenter ants and rodents flee the natural habitat of the outdoors for the comforts of your warm, cozy, comfy home. Stopping this unwanted invasion is up to you!

Even though these creatures are tiny in size, the damage they can cause can be far more astronomical than their minute statures. While property damage should be a critical concern for homeowner, equally, if not more important, is the possible transmission of germs, bacteria and diseases these pests and rodents carry.

Rodents such as mice or rats can spread diseases like Salmonella and Hantavirus, can potentially contaminate food and leave unpleasant odors. They can also gnaw on electrical wires and tear insulation, which can eventually lead to electrical fires.

Many people are unaware that cockroaches are one of the most common causes of indoor allergens and can trigger asthma attacks. Also spider bites, especially if venomous, may lead to even more serious complications.

Although the fall migration brings an influx of pests into your home, some may have already claimed residency unbeknownst to you. Bed bugs are a good example of such, and are nasty little critters that can permeate every possible nook and cranny of your home. You can find them in furniture, inside your walls, and of course in your bedding.

Consistent and professional pest control is essential to dealing with any of the above-mentioned issues, especially in the case of treating a bed bug infestation.

The National Pest Management Association, a nonprofit organization that strives to protect the public from household pests, suggests the following tips on their website to prevent pest issues this fall:

    • Install door sweeps on exterior doors and repair damaged screens.
    • Screen vents and openings to chimneys.
    • Seal cracks and crevices on the outside of the home, including areas where utilities and pipes enter.
    • Store food in airtight containers and dispose of garbage regularly in sealed receptacles.
    • Replace loose mortar and weather stripping around the basement foundation and windows.
    • Eliminate all moisture sites, including leaking pipes and clogged drains.
    • Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house; keep shrubbery well-trimmed.
    • If you suspect a pest infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect, identify and treat the problem.

Following these simple steps can ensure that your only guests for the holidays are the invited ones!
